Trey injury #2

Trey injury #1

Headed home. :(

We had planned to drive all day sunday and use monday to get back to normal, but thinking about the kids in the car for 8 hours during the day is just.... Ugh! So we are hitting the road saturday night around 5pm. Expect lots of catch up posts from me tomorrow night! We've been too busy doing nothing for me to post.

Trey took this photo!

The day is wide open!

Jonah and I are on our own this morning. Joe and Trey are going on a jeep tour! What to do, what to do? Playground? Throw rocks in the stream? Go out to breakfast? Hike? Check out the public library?

Overheard

The showers at the campground are free for cold water, and $3 for hot water. There is also a pool which is $4 for the day.

Overheard, man talking to a woman who I assume is his wife:

Woman: I cheated, I paid for the hot shower.

Man: but you went to the pool today!

Woman: I know, but I didn't get in the water.

Man: the whole reason we paid for the pool is so we wouldn't have to pay for your shower!!

Last night jonah was crying out in his sleep, so I went to check on him. His whole upper body was in his zipped sleeping bag and his lower half was sticking out. It's like he crawled in head first!

Lunchtime!

The lunch of camping champions!

When it rains in Tellruide, it REALLY rains

We abandoned plans to go out to dinner. We made grilled cheese and had a picnic inside!

First glimpse of one of my favorite places on earth

On the road!

11:30, almost 3 hour drive to Telluride. With any luck the kids will sleep in the car and we'll arrive rested and ready to explore!

(Thanks to Abby and Patrick who let us shower at their place before leaving town - I feel like a new woman!)

Friday and Saturday

Our trip plans didn't firm up until last week. We knew we wanted to go Telluride and camp in Telluride Town Park. They don't take reservations and it is hard to get in, so we figured our best chance is to roll into town on a Monday morning. Gunnison is halfway and we've never been here. A middle school friend, Abby, lives in Gunnison. I haven't seen her in over 20 years. She and her husband Patrick have made this leg of the trip very cool. They found a free campsite with awesome scenery and SHADE just a few miles from town, and were nice enough to save the spot by putting up a tent. They led us to the site down a long dirt road which we never would have found on our own. It's not a campground - just public land and you can just set up camp anywhere you want. The site was clearly a favorite spot because someone had made a rock-lined fire pit and benches out of old trees. Having this amazing spot truly has made our first few days on the road so relaxing. They stayed to visit for a few hours while the kids explored. Even though we aren't far from town, there is no one around us and the dogs get to roam free.

On saturday there was a lot going on in town. First a pancake breakfast (yum!), then a parade. Of course the kids LOVE a good parade with lots of candy. We wandered around the farmer's market then played in the huge playground.

After naps we did a bit of exploring around our site, then Abby and Patrick had us over for dinner. The dogs had some new friends with their 2 chocolate labs. Dinner was fantastic and the kids were on their best behavior. They were so good with the kids and let them get in the hot tub, which they of course loved. It was a great night and it was really fun to catch up on 2 decades with Abby. We are definitely coming back to visit!

Bye bye Gunnison!

And by to our good friends Abby, Patrick, and the best campsite we've stayed in.

Playground

Gunnison has one of the coolest parks! We stopped here for a break a few years ago when we came to Telluride.

Night 1

We had a perfect dinner at Mario's. I had their famous 1/2 and 1/2 which was half pasta salad, half regular salad. With tons of cheese and olives. Yum! Joe built a raging fire and then it was bedtime! Today we'll get some s'mores stuff.

Overnight was ok - the first night is always the hardest I think, just getting used to different sleeping arrangements. Jonah cried out a few times when he had his face smushed up against the canvas.

How perfect is this campsite?

No one around, no phone service, free, kids have entertained themselves since we got here.... Just perfect!

Sure glad Joe knows how to change a tire!

Crap

Looks like joe will be changing a tire!

Gunnison or bust!

And we're off! It should be about 4.5 - 5 hours to Gunnison where we will camp for 3 nights. Then onto Telluride!

Pretzel hands

Trey amuses himself on the drive home.

Our own private trail from our campsite to the river

And we're off!

To the next chapter of the trip - Canon City and the Royal Gorge. If this leg of the trip was rustic and all about nature and getting dirty, the next part is about activities! We have games, rides, zip lining, pool, and hookups!

Trey and Joe should be rafting by any minute!

This has been everything a family vacation should be

Scraped knees, campfires, hiking, very dirty clothes, home cooked meals, wildlife spotting, and early mornings. Perfection.
Trey: if you let me stay up really late I'll be really good. I mean, as good as I can be.
